Open Competitions

The West Mendip Soaring Association (WMSA) hold four open competions (entry by members and non-members) and up to eight club competitions (members only) each year.

Open Competitions attract people from long distances who want to test their flying skills and / or building skills against other competitors.  Crook Peak is very well suited for holding open competitions due to the fact that we can fly in any wind direction - we have a suitable slope for every point of the compass all within a few minutes walk from 'The Peak'.  Competitors hate nothing more than travelling to a slope only to find that the competition is cancelled because the wind is in the wrong direction.  This simply doesn't happen on Crook Peak.  Open competitions will only be cancelled or postponed if the weather is very poor (hard rain or very strong winds) or if only very light winds for Scale or PSS competitions (although being close to the sea, we usually get westerly sea-breezes in the afternoons which often saves the day).

WMSA member, Bob Flook, has created a 12 page 2008 Calendar with event details and photos.  To download a copy of this calendar in PDF format, click here (569kB).
